H.C. Andersen’s House by Kengo Kuma & VOLA

Kengo Kuma’s transformation of H.C. Andersen’s House in Odense brings the famed author’s world to life. With VOLA’s timeless design, the museum creates an enchanting blend of storytelling, architecture, and nature.

In the heart of Odense, the birthplace of world-renowned Danish poet and author Hans Christian Andersen, a remarkable cultural transformation has taken place. The metamorphosis of H.C. Andersen’s House, orchestrated by acclaimed Japanese architect Kengo Kuma & Associates, offers visitors an immersive journey into Andersen’s world, weaving reality and fantasy into a unique architectural experience. Here, the museum’s design mirrors the poet’s imagination—spaces unwind like stories, with gardens, pavilions, and sunken courtyards blending harmoniously to tell Andersen’s tales.

Kuma’s vision expands the museum from a conventional tribute to a mesmerizing experience, with winding pathways, interactive galleries, and enchanting installations that echo the playful and emotive nature of Andersen’s work. The landscape is woven with maze-like hedges, while a series of pavilions composed of wood and glass serve as delicate vessels for exhibits and educational spaces. A series of interconnected narratives unfold, each one blurring the boundaries between the natural world and the architectural form. In this way, the museum itself becomes an immersive story, drawing visitors deeper into the tales of ”The Little Mermaid,” ”The Princess and the Pea,” and other unforgettable stories by Andersen.

Central to the museum’s architectural language is a sense of harmony with nature. Inspired by Denmark’s forests and its traditional design heritage, the pavilions evoke the essence of timber-framed houses, blending seamlessly into the landscape of mature trees, curved hedges, and planted courtyards. With interiors designed to mirror the feeling of a forest clearing, dappled light plays throughout the museum’s spaces, creating an atmosphere that changes with the seasons, revealing new experiences with each passing day.

Kengo Kuma’s approach to design is renowned for its storytelling ability, where architecture is not simply built form but a narrative device. In H.C. Andersen’s House, this vision is brought to life through a seamless interplay of nature, architecture, and imagination. Working in collaboration with Danish architect Cornelius Vöge and landscape architects MASU Planning, Kuma’s team carefully chose materials that are deeply rooted in Danish culture and design, crafting a museum that feels both ancient and modern.

VOLA’s design fits seamlessly within this context. Known for its elegance and simplicity, VOLA’s products have been thoughtfully incorporated throughout the museum. “VOLA is simple, yet at the same time very unique in its expression. It was designed over 50 years ago, but it still appears extremely modern,” says Dan Cornelius of Cornelius Vöge. The use of VOLA throughout the museum contributes to its sense of timelessness—functionality meets art, and design meets storytelling. Cornelius continues, “It has been our responsibility to choose products that work with the museum’s simplicity and tranquillity. This is where VOLA comes into play – it’s almost personal in its design. In this way, VOLA perhaps resembles Andersen’s fairy tales: timeless and modern at the same time.”

As a tribute to Andersen’s creativity, the museum is designed to be experienced from both within and without. Visitors wandering the streets of Odense are treated to glimpses of the museum’s enchanted interior through winding paths and transparent walls. The gardens, treated as part of the exhibition, allow the museum to unfold organically into the urban fabric of the city, inviting both locals and visitors to explore and be captivated by the magic within.

A visit to Hans Christian Andersen’s House is a surprising and fascinating journey into the author’s creative universe – and his beloved fairy tales.

Kuma’s emphasis on natural materials and craft resonates throughout the museum. “The materials we used for the museum are not special materials—green hedges, wood, and glass. Quite ordinary materials. But we have tried to create a different world with these classic Danish materials,” explains Kuma. This approach reflects the architectural firm’s global reputation for creating monumental forms from seemingly simple materials, lending each project a unique authenticity and cultural depth.

H.C. Andersen’s House is not just a celebration of a single author; it is an ode to the power of storytelling, design, and the enduring appeal of the natural world. And with the integration of VOLA’s timeless design elements, the museum’s architecture not only honors the poet’s legacy but also redefines the possibilities of modern design.

VOLA’s role in this project is a testament to their commitment to great design, seamlessly blending form and function. With their signature elegance and simplicity, VOLA contributes to the overall narrative of H.C. Andersen’s House, where the story is not just told it is lived.
