Norrøna Varg YS with VOLA

In northern Norway, where the coastline meets the open Arctic sea, Norrøna Varg YS and VOLA present a way of living shaped by climate, material and restraint. Here, architecture, water and material precision come together in an environment where every detail serves a purpose, and where the boundary between interior and landscape quietly dissolves.

Moored in Kabelvåg, the yacht offers a rare perspective on how design can respond to one of the most demanding environments on earth. Built for Arctic conditions, every decision is grounded in function, yet expressed with quiet precision.

Design Defined by Environment
For HOOM, projects like this reflect a broader shift within the premium segment. It is no longer about separation from nature, but about proximity to it. Architecture becomes a mediator between human needs and the surrounding landscape. Large openings frame the horizon, while direct access to the deck allows wind, light and sea to become part of the spatial experience.

The layout accommodates up to six guests and feels both precise and considered. The scale is compact, yet the experience is expansive. Materials are selected for endurance, but also for warmth. Wood, textiles and metal surfaces respond to shifting light and temperature, creating an atmosphere that evolves throughout the day.

Under sail, everything is defined by control and responsiveness. At anchor, the character changes. It becomes a place for stillness, where the surrounding landscape sets the rhythm.

Spa & Sauna
Below deck, a custom-built wood sauna is integrated into the architecture. It is part of the spatial logic rather than an added feature. Heat and enclosure create a sense of calm in contrast to the cold exterior.

On deck, a bathtub is positioned to capture uninterrupted views across the Norwegian coastline. Warm water meets Arctic air. Shelter meets exposure. A quiet dialogue between elements that feels both immediate and timeless.

A Shared Approach to Craft and Longevity For HOOM, the connection to VOLA is a natural extension of this philosophy. Through their collaboration with Norrøna Varg YS, VOLA reinforces a design approach rooted in longevity, precision and material integrity. Their work reflects a Scandinavian tradition where function and form are inseparable, and where quality is defined over time.

This shared perspective creates a cohesive narrative. From yacht to architecture to product design, the focus remains the same. Thoughtful restraint, enduring materials and a commitment to environments that stand the test of both climate and time.

Ultimately, the project is defined by balance. Between performance and presence. Between exposure and protection. Between movement and stillness. A sailing yacht shaped not only for the Arctic, but by it.
